About the designer & brand

“I love fashion. I love beautiful things that are well made, with rich and luxurious fabrics. I’m passionate about art, music, modern architecture, and all things chic. And I think the girls of Charlie’s Angels were possibly the chicest on earth. I worship Charlotte Rampling, Jane Birkin and Lauren Hutton. I think women should dress in a way that’s effortless but never lazy. And nothing is sexier than a woman in a long dress with flats. I love it when I see an individual’s personal style reflected in the way they dress. And I always think a woman should dress in contradictions – youthful and sophisticated, masculine and feminine, bold and muted colors.”

Kate Winslet Doesn’t Really Care too much about Heels She Wear, Anything gonna change after 3rd Marriage?

Kate Winslet got us a surprise before the New Year for her 3rd time marriage with Richard Branson’s nephew – Ned RocknRoll.

Seems like Kate doesn’t really care too much about what kinda of heels, she particularly favours the simple strips, given them slim or wide. Maybe to her less is more.

However, we are waiting to see if the new husband will influence her on any fashion choices that she will make.

Congratulations to Kate Winslet and Ned RocknRoll!

High Heels in Versailles

Traveled to France.

Saturday, went to Chateau de Versailles.  Crowds, noises, beautiful gardens and grandiose palace — everything as I expected.

But I saw something that I didn’t expect to see — The huge High Heels from France born Portuguese artist – Joana Vasconcelos.   Today is the 2nd last day of her 3 months exhibition in Versailles, thank God that I didn’t miss it.  She transformed everyday stuff together with inventive and unexpected technologies to something really eye-popping and sophisticated.

As these high heels made of pans and lids and pods.  Yes, pans, lids and pods from our daily kitchen.  So brave, so big and so proper. Her stuff fits into Versailles effortlessly, although sometime I thought for a second why… but after another second, I could understand and smile.

High Heels in Versailles

Real piece of work.

I am happy to see them in the amazing Versailles.

The Fascinating History of High Heels

Have spent some time to research the history of high heels.  It’s quite fascinating!  Check it out!

3500 B.C.
Precursors to the high heels were found in Egyptian tomes and on murals. Heels were worn mostly by the higher class.

200 B.C.
Platform sandals with high cork or wood soles became popular among actors in ancient Greece and Rome.

Middle Ages
Men and women all worn pattens or wooden soles, which were clearly a precursor to the high heels, which would help them stay away from mud.

1400s
Sandals with platforms was still popular, called “chopines”, the heels ranging from 15 to 42 cm tall. Being associated with sexuality, in the year 1430 this shoe was banned in Venice.

1533
To make her look taller, Catherine de Medici worn high heels when she married King Henry II of France. The high heel fashion was introduced to the European aristocracy.

1600s
English Parliament decided to punish as witches for all women who worn high heels to seduce or attract men into marriage.

1700s
France’s King Louis XIV worn heels with 2 to 5 inches decorated with battle scenes, called “Louis Heels”. He deemed that no one could wear heels higher than him. Typical king!

1745
Madame De Pompadour promoted high narrow “Pompadoure Heels” due to her own tiny foot. Ladies tape their feet to make them look smaller.

1793
Napoleon banished high heels to show equality due to its associations with wealth and aristocracy. Since then, the height of heels continued to go down, that was the start of low heels.

1800s
High heels arrived in the US and gaining momentum. The invention of sewing machine marked the varieties of heels. The heels then were promoted as even beneficial to health through advertisement as reliving back pain, correct posture, etc.

1858
First Parisian footwear company was founded by Englishman Charles Worth, named the Pump Pinet.

1920s
After the 1st world War, with the development of the economy, the shoes became an essential fashion accessories. They were even used for dancing. Ginger Rogers danced backwards in her high heels, Marilyn Monroe also loved every high heeled shoes.

1940s
Since the 2nd World War, due to low supply the high heels went through a phase of moderation – lower and wider heels were popular.

1950s
Shoe maker Roger Vivier worked for designer Christian Dior, and the duo together invented the heel stiletto.

1960s
Heeled boots became popular to style with mini skirt. Due to the high price of leather, synthetic material heels were welcomed in the fashion scene.

1970s
The Platform became extremely popular for both men and women, in reminiscent of the ancient designs. The platforms were mostly with psychedelic colors and swirls.

1980s & 1990s
High heels made a successful comeback. Although feminists argue that high heels means women’s submission to please men. However modern women claim that they wear high heels for themselves, since high heels represent efficiency, power and authority.

21st Century (NOW)

High heels are in our everyday life and new styles are coming out every week if not every day. Models and super stars always stay at the front of the fashion scene, sometimes with the shocking shoe design. Footwear industry is bigger than ever. High heels symbolizes glamour, elegance, femininity and confidence. We will see more & more designs coming out and beautiful women in high heels.

What will be the next?  Only Time will tell…

Alexander McQueen 2012 Fall Shoes Highlights

I like Alexander McQueen designs,  of course quite expensive for me to consume but Fashion is for everyone to watch and appreciate.  The Alexander McQueen 2012 Fall Shoes Collection is breathtaking,  in terms of high heels – look at the below highlights selected by our editor, each one of them deserve our praise.  The popular fabrics are suede (note: not patent leather, that’s a different direction)  & simple straight design with some details, given it as lace patches, small tied bow at the back of the heel, small flower embellishment, metal buckle or simple decoration.  Some pumps are inspired by gaga heels and flamingo dance & nature…

Enjoy!

What do you think? Which one do you like the best?

This pair is from Guess.  It’s designed with slinky suede with snakeskin leather, high platform peep toe bootie with heels 12.5cm high, accentuated by the elegant chain trim at the back.

Love heels and wear heels!

Love heels?

Sure yay! That’s why we are on Heeladdict! :)

According to shoe designers,  ”low heel” is considered less than 6cm;   while heels  between 6-8.5 cm are “mid heels”, and anything over that is considered  ”high heel”. Precursor of heels appeared in history around middle age, and in 15th century, there were kinda of platform shoes were created and popular in Europe.  Later heels became a symbol of noble fashion around 17, 18th century, early 19th century, people more preferred to lower heels until since 1980s, high heels came back to the fashion scene.

Although wearing high heels for long time can cause pain and uneasiness, but women still love them because wearing high heels make women look slander and taller. Apart from as a fashion item, high heel has been always in the center of  women’s liberation movement.  In 15th century,  some writer claimed that high heels were “invented by husbands who hoped the cumbersome movement that entailed would make illicit liaisons difficult”.  Which reminds us of  the lotus shoes of China – not only for aesthetic reasons but also to prevent women from walking fast or escaping.

If you have watched  ”She’s the Man”, Viola Hastings said ”Heels are a male invention designed to make a woman’s butt look smaller and to make it harder for ‘her’ to run away.”

She's the Man Poster

Modern feminists also argue that high heels make the woman like the  sex object by sacrificing practical comfort in favour of an alleged increase in sex appeal.

Come on, now it’s year 2012.  All women have enough freedom and power to decide if they want to wear high heels or not, and what that mean to them!  Apart from the  ’sex appeal’ platform high heels specifically worn by strip  dancers, normal women wear high heels not to show anybody else, but to please themselves.

There are different heeled shoes, boots, wedges, sandals… they have different heights, different designs and colors.  and women wear them in different occasions – to party a stiletto silver heel, to work a black leather mid heel, to window shopping, a nice designed heeled sandals, with a comfortable ballet flat hiding in the purse just in case the feet get tired…

WE are modern women and we decide when we want to wear high heels and what to wear. We don’t wear high heels for men, we wear high heels for ourselves…

That’s loud and Clear!
